Former Imperial capital and site of some of the fiercest conflict of the American-Vietnam war, Hue (pronounced "Hway") is now a thriving city with much to offer the visitor.

Forbidden Citadel

Be sure to head here first for a glimpse into a long gone and almost forgotten world of Imperial splendour. The remains of the Citadel are quite spectacular and the faded glory of the Imperial household manifest in the weed disrupted paving, the archived musical instruments and the feeling of total abandonment. Believe in ghosts? You could well imagine them wandering the grounds and buildings here.

Tombs of the Emperors

A few kilometres outside the city stand some mausoleums of the great ruling dynasty of Hue. Symbolising the fall of Imperial splendour, the mausoleums have some great monumental architecture. Many people hire a bike and cycle out here which makes a great day trip.

Thien Mu Pagoda

One of the most photogenic and architecturally splendid monuments in the whole of the country, this one is certainly not to be missed. For those with a sense of the gory, the monastery also contains the light blue Austin car which a local monk drove to Saigon in before burning himself in protest at the oppression of Buddhism, an image which was shown around the world.

DMZ

Always hankered to visit the scenes of some of the most fierce fighting of the Vietnam-American war, then visit the DMZ on a day trip from Hue.
