A simple look at the statistics will convince you that there is no place in the world where giant marlins of up to 1,000lbs can be hooked within just 15 minutes of boarding your boat. In fact, Mauritius held the all-tackle world record for Pacific Blue marlin with a 1,100lbs specimen in 1966 not to be beaten until 1982. Giant sized Blue marlins have been boated with satisfying regularity over recent years. More than 25 individuals weighed over 1,000lbs so far, the biggest was 1,430lbs.
Big Game Fishing as a sport is practised throughout the year in Mauritius, although the best season for marlin is from October to April. The big predators feed about a mile from the shoreline where the bottom falls away to 2,000 feet. Black, Blue and Striped Marlins can be taken, along with Sailfish, Wahoo, Dorado, Yellow-fin tuna, Bonito or Shark.
If you prefer something a little more relaxing, there are many coral reefs alive with fish of all colours and sizes. Local fishermen will take you out for a few rupees.
All Mauritian deep-sea fishing boats are well-equipped with ship-to-shore radio and trolling equipment.
